It's an important niche, but other cities have niche's too. The big thing about Washington DC that gives it the win is the influence the name of the city has and what it stands for. In my opinion, 5 years ago it would have been a 3 way tie between Chicago, Washington DC, & Los Angeles. Now it's just Washington DC.
Chicago has a stagnant and slow economy & Los Angeles has an obsolete economy. Both are out of the question for the # 2 spot as of modern times, in my opinion.

Yeah and it will only get bigger and more powerful. By 2020 D.C. will be just about on par with NYC, scaled down of course but still, no other city will be remotely lose to D.C.
The Govt is important and influential, not sure I truly equate that with the MSA though, though a huge factor
I like the DC area a lot but might chose a couple areas ahead of it for me personally. DC Political influence is the gathering of representation from all over the country. From that perspective NYC as a city has more representatives or CA as a state has the most representation.
To me it's a close call between the DC area and the Bay Area.
I really, really, really love San Francisco. Really. And the combination of a robust economy + natural beauty + exciting urban centers definitely puts it among the top in the country.
One of the things I love most about DC is the Go-Go music scene. Too bad its never really taken off on a national level. I thought one day we'd see a Grammy category for "Best Go-Go performance", LOL! At any rate, these have to be some of the most entertaining Go-Go videos ever...check the crowd...one time for Maine...
