Rank them from MOST to LEAST:

Deep South
Upland South
Mid-Atlantic (inc. PA)
New England
Midwest - Great Lakes (inc Wisconsin)
Midwest - Plains (inc Minnesota)
Rocky Mountains
Southwest
Pacific Northwest
California
Alaska
Hawaii

This is not my ranking, just a listing. I won't rank because of lack of experience. Generalities only, I realise everyone is different etc...also discuss cities, specific areas where you find people to be more 'polite.' Generally positive, but can also be negative (being too anal about it).

I haven't traveled through enough of the US, but some of the most polite people I met were in Georgia and the Florida panhandle.

Politest? Upper Midwest, but it is also known they are not the friendliest (especially in MN).

I would say the northeast, from maryland north is the most sophisticated region of the nation by far, and probably the snobbiest.

Yeah, they may have the dress rehearsal nailed for which fork to use when, and on what side everything goes, but are they polite? Snobs usually aren't.

Ate at a place called Nickleby's (didn't see it listed anymore) in Greenwich CT twice. It was a good American restaurant, but you could tell you were in Greenwich. You could go in wearing nice casual clothes and not worry about correct fork usage. I don't go to country clubs, since I don't golf, and it's not my scene. I don't recall ever setting foot in a yacht club.

I'm just taking cue from the existence of "charm school" for executives. I understand that they train them in this kind of stuff. I would expect there to be more executive "charm schools" in the NE than anywhere else.

And, yes, there are polite people in the Northeast. I would take walks around my uncle's suburban NJ house and everyone who was outside would acknowledge me, and some would start up conversations. But then, this was a very middle-class suburb. No pretense whatsoever.

people can be nice anywhere. As a whole the northeast has a very elitist attitude. Im keeping general.
