Air Quality: SLC
Natural Beauty: SLC (barely)
Places to see: Denver
Things to do: Denver
Ski Areas: Denver
Better shopping: Denver
Nightlife: Denver
People: Denver
Atmosphere: Denver
Climate: Denver

They are pretty similar but Denver is three times bigger (by population), so any catagory pertaining to development or amenities Denver is going to win. I gave SLC air quality and natural beauty, but only by a nose.

Over all I would pick Denver.

(Disclaimer: I live in Denver so there may be a small bias)

i would pick denver if only for the fact that it's more connected to the outside world, you can fly virtually anywhere in the US for under US$200 RT, and it will be a direct flight. for slc you have more expensive flights and a good chance you'll have to do a layover somewhere, which makes it way too isolated for my tastes since weekend trips are important to me.
