I live in southern CT and if I'm traveling in the northeast, I say the suburb I live in... If I'm traveling outside the northeast, I say "CT just outside of NYC" and if I'm traveling internationally, I say "NYC area"...
for the n.y.c.'ers i know, they are very territorial about claiming the 5 boros.
i only have experience with boston and a place like cambridge is functionally (though not technically) a part of boston. as long as your on the t, no-one bats an eye if you claim boston.

I have never considered this a problem. I was born in St. Louis but grew up in St. Louis county (unincorporated) so, of course we always said St. Louis. That's what the post office wanted anyway. In St. Louis it apparently matters more what high school you went to.
Now I live in the third largest city in my state of New Mexico but no one has heard of it so it is easier to just say Albuquerque....to distinguish it from Las Cruces or Santa Fe or try to explain where I live.

i think the opposite is for boston. in two seperate occasions, while in college in the middle of the country, my friends would say something like: you should meet some girl i met from boston... they were actually from vermont and maine.
also calling a place like somerville a suburb just sounds... wrong ?
that would be like calling queens, ny a suburb.
queens was annexed into n.y.c in 1898.
somerville incorperated away from boston in 1842.

I don't believe that when most people say they are from "x city" that they mean the city limits. Their intentions usually are the metropolitan area, which almost always has the same name as the largest city, even here on CD.
Being from a suburb of Dallas, I always tell people I am from Dallas-Fort Worth because that is the name of the metropolitan area (well, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, but that is a mouthful). A lot of other people I know do the same or say the Metroplex, DFW, or North Texas, with a few saying the specific name of the suburb. Exception being people from specifically the city of Dallas or Fort Worth, particularly the latter it seems.
People in the NYC burbs definitely don't do this. I live 7 miles away from the NYC border and I would feel like an imposter if I told someone I lived in NYC.
It seems like most people in the Atlanta burbs do for whatever reason.
