i have a feeling a lot of blacks are leaving the state altogether.

LA is more a place of demographic extremes. almost completely anglo suburbs, almost completely hispanic suburbs, almost completely asian suburbs, etc.

That's the nature of the Bay Area. You get a similar feeling of separation in the East Bay once you cross the Caldecott Tunnel or once you go over 580 into the Tri Valley. You get a similar sense of separation in Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz and Solano County. That's just how it is.

Its pretty similar, 5.8% of the LA CSA outside of LA city is Black and 5.1% of the Bay Area outside of SF, Oakland and SJ are Black.

And if we look at the counties with the highest proportion of Blacks, we see that in both LA and SF, Blacks are moving from the inner cities to outlying suburbs and even neighborhing Metros such as Sacramento, Stockton and Baksersfield.

The 4 "Blackest" counties in CA are actually in Northern CA.

Northern CA Counties
By Blacks as a Percentage of Total Pop(2010)
Solano 14.0%
Alameda 12.1%
Sacramento 9.8%
Contra Costa 8.8%
San Joaquin 7.0%
San Francisco 5.7%
Fresno 4.8%
San Mateo 2.5%
Stanislaus 2.5%
Marin 2.4%
Santa Clara 2.3%
Yolo 2.3%

Southern CA Counties
By Blacks as a Percentage of Total Pop(2010)
Los Angeles 8.3%
San Bernardino 8.3%
Riverside 5.9%
Kern 5.3%
San Diego 4.7%
San Luis Opisbo 1.8%
Santa Barbara 1.6%
Ventura 1.5%
Orange 1.4%

yeah, i think a big part of the norcal having the blackest counties is due to the massive size of LA county. I think the South Bay region may be 14-15% black.

Guidelines: 1. State whether you're using MSA or CSA, and if you're not using either state what you're using to reflect your metro's suburban region
2. State what you consider to be the "city-proper" (i.e. the city whose demographics will be subtracted out of the metropolitan total)
3. State where you're getting your data
4. Shorcomings of data
1. Chicago-Joliet-Naperville,IL-Lake IN MSA
2. Exclude city of Chicago, Kenosha County, WI, and Porter County, IN
3. USAtoday.com 2010 census data
4 Only Cook County saw a decrease

Total Suburban Chicago MSA population for 8 counties- 6,231,793

Counties- Cook(suburbs only), Dupage, Lake, Will, Mchenry , Kane, Kendall, and Lake(Indiana)

Demographics

1.) Whites- 3,908,237-62.71%
2.) Hispanics- 1,129,465-18.12%
3.) Blacks- 736,506-11.8%
4.) Asians- 377,055-6.05%
5.). Mixed- 144,321- 2.32%

I'll or someone else break it down by county. I'm about to get some sleep.

I'm too lazy to look up Pittsburgh's numbers, but it's a reasonably diverse city surrounded by mostly lily-white suburbs. I say "mostly" because some river towns like Aliquippa and Duquesne are predominantly black, and some suburbs like Monroeville and Franklin Park have emerging Asian populations.

Yes, the areas in and around the South Bay have the highest concentration of Blacks, but both Northern CA and Southern CA have really spread out African American populations.

Also,
When I group together 5 counties in NorCal to roughly the size of Los Angeles County, it really does shed more light on just how spread out the region's diversity is.

Alameda/Contra Costa/Sacramento/San Joaquin/Solano: 4,647 square miles

vs.

Los Angeles: 4,060 square miles

Los Angeles County
Total Population 9,818,605
Hispanic.....................................4,687 ,889....................47.7%
Non Hispanic White.......................2,728,321............. ......27.7%
Asian.........................................1,32 5,671....................13.4%
Black............................................8 15,086.....................8.3%
Two or more Races..........................194,921............ ........1.9%
Some other Race..............................25,367.......... ...........0.6%
Native Hawaiian/Pac. Islander.............22,464.....................0. 2%
American Indian...............................18,886....... ...............0.1%

Alameda/Contra Costa/Sacramento/San Joaquin/Solano
Total Population 5,076,734
Non Hispanic White.......................2,117,195............. .......41.7%
Hispanic......................................1,26 7,342....................24.9%
Asian............................................8 91,923....................17.5%
Black............................................. 524,962....................10.3%
Two or More Races..........................205,741............ .........4.0%
Native Hawaiian/Pac. Islander.............35,903......................0 .7%
American Indian................................20,091...... ...............0.4%
Some other Race..............................13,577.......... ............0.2%

The Norcal 5 have a higher percentage of Non Hispanic Whites, Asians, Blacks, Multiracial, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and American Indians.

LA County has a higher percentage of Hispanics and Some other Race.
