Philly has always seemed the most architecturally similar to NYC. I'm kinda torn as to which city would come next? Baltimore and Boston are both roughly equal distrances from NYC.
Baltimore has more of the solid built brick feel of a place like Brooklyn. Places like Federal Hill and Fells Point have a bit of a Cobble Hill feel to them. Mt Vernon Square and Bolton Hill also have a vaugely NYC brownstone feel.
Boston has more of the dense (semi-)gritty, urban northeast feel. Areas like East Boston and Chelsea remind me a little of Union City, NJ or parts of the Brooklyn/Queens. The South End sort of seems like Park Slope. The extreme density of the Beacon Hill/North End feel a bit like the below 14th Street nabes.
