Then there are artists like Astronautalis relocating here because of the scene.
All one has to do to get an idea of how supportive a city is is to go to google.com/trends and type in the name of a band. Minneapolis has been listed as the top city for bands like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Foster the People, Phantogram, Yeasayer, the tUnE-yArDs, etc... before they were even introduced to most parts of the country.
Not sure I would count these as true indie bands.
Plus I'm pretty sure foster the people are from LA (although I don't know jack about them and the less I know the better ).
And seriously, why are you touting them for the Twin Cities?. Two words: Husker Du. The end-all, be-all of Minnesota independent music.
I'm still surprised I'm the only one that mentioned DC. Jawbox, Dismemberment Plan, Fugazi, Q and not U, Black Eyes, The Evens, A Day in Black and White, pretty much everything that comes out of there is golden.

LOL! Someone has trouble comprehending what s/he has read. Where did I state Foster the People are from the Twin Cities? I used them and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros as an example for what I stated about searching Google Trends. BTW, I would consider Foster the People as indie pop and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros as indie folk.
I agree with you in regards to DC. Very underrated in terms of its music scene.

But indie music is pretty over unless you're trying to get on a car commercial.
It doesn't look that way to me at all. If anything indie is achieving more and more mainstream commercial success. (I am not a fan, so this is not being said from a position of defending the style.)
