I'm not sure if the Twin Cities area is necessarily overlooked, it's just that people probably don't even realize that movies take place here unless it's a cultural satire like Fargo or Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Seattle. It once was a premiere movie shooting location, but now almost all of the industry has moved to Vancouver, British Columbia due to their incentives. And guess what? Most movies filmed in Vancouver are stand-ins for Seattle. There are literally hundreds of Lifetime TV movies, as well as major motion pictures that are filmed in B.C., but are set in Seattle, likely due to geography and many around the world who don't know the difference.

I'd throw in Montreal as most overlooked when it comes to movies. There are so many movies shot here, such as Mother (I was an extra on this film as well), The Aviator, X-Men(apocalypse and days of future past), John Wick, Life of Pi, Batman and Robin (1997), The Red Violin, The Terminal, The Notebook, Orphan, Catch Me If You Can, 300, Benjamin Button, etc.. Of course it's a stand-in for either NYC or Europe but still, lots of movies here and noone knows about this.

Vancouver/BC doesn't only do stand in's for Seattle but for other cities such as New York. One of the things that bugs me the most is when they do a stand in for some rural/wild area on the east coast, Europe, Asia etc. but the Douglas fir trees and the western sword ferns just screams PNW, I guess people in Hollywood think all forests look the same.

For a Midwestern city, Cincinnati garners its fair share of media coverage. However, in regards to the music and movie industries, it may well be one of the most overlooked cities in the nation.

From the 1940's to the 1970's, Cincinnati stood out as a music industry trendsetter that rivaled Nashville and Memphis. The reasons were King Records and James Brown:
* The warehouse where it all began: https://thecitiview.com/cincinnati/a...ity-sound.5685

* The bold downtown "King of Soul" wall-mural:https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...vt=0&eim=1,2,6
* The city's effort to preserve its landmark musical heritage site: https://www.wcpo.com/news/insider/ci...rom-demolition

Just as impressive is Cincinnati's growing reputation as a desirable place to make movies. For example, these movies were shot (fully or partially) in or around the Cincinnati metro:
* RAIN MAN
* TRAFFIC
* CAROL
* AIRBORNE
* THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER
* THE IDES OF MARCH
* MILES AHEAD
* LITTLE MAN TATE
* MARAUDERS
* IN TOO DEEP
* THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT
* TANGO & CASH
* EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL AND VILE
* INCONCEIVABLE
* REPRISAL
* THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN
* EIGHT MEN OUT
* THE MIGHTY
* THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JOHN GOTTI
* POINT BLANK
* A RAGE IN HARLEM
* THE PUBLIC
* MILK MONEY
* DRY RUN
* THE PRIDE OF JESSE HALLAM
* FRESH HORSES
* GIRL FROM THE HOOD
* LOST IN YONKERS
* A MOM FOR CHRISTMAS
* CITY OF HOPE
* DIRTY PICTURES
* MY DAYS OF MERCY
* A REASON TO BELIEVE
* HARPER VALLEY PTA
* GOAT
* KITT KITTREDGE: AN AMERICAN GIRL
* HAUNT
* ARTWORKS
* DONNEYBROOK
* BLOOD HEIST

I don't know about movies, but for music and games, Seattle and Portland are quite impressive. Portland beats the top three cities on metal - and that's not in per capita terms, but just straight away. Seattle tends to produce most of the good American games these days, excluding the boring AAA titles from California (though it depends on your tastes). It seems to be getting some representation there, though not much.

Here is the count for metal bands, according to Encyclopaedia Metallica:
[city] - [number of doom metal bands] - [number of black metal bands]
New York City - 78 - 124
Chicago - 89 - 130
Los Angeles - 72 - 167
San Francisco - 37 - 55
Philadelphia - 44 - 67
Boston - 51 - 53
Houston - 28 - 53
Phoenix - 15 - 51

Toronto - 35 - 87
Montreal - 43 - 149
Vancouver - 40 - 69

Seattle - 70 - 81
Portland - 112 - 154

Indianapolis has The Fault in Our Stars (which was pretty much completely filmed in the Pittsburgh area where they even recreated known locations from Indy) and the animated movie Turbo about a snail in the Indy 500. That's pretty much it. Hoosiers is the only movie I can think that filmed in part in Indianapolis. In television, Good Morning Miss Bliss (first season that became Saved by the Bell) and One Day at a Time were set here. None of these shows were filmed here, though.

I once saw this infographic of American cities ranked by how many times they were mentioned in rap songs, and Chicago was surprisingly far down. There were a lot of cities ahead of it that were smaller and even had smaller black percentages of the population (like Miami).
