Personally, I don't think anything can beat a good New England Lobster Roll!

NYC is fantastic for its variety of food - you get NY pizza, some of the most highly regarded restaurants in the world and an amazing selection of authentic ethnic food from all over the world. But other than a few random items (like pizza), NYC isn't known for a signature cuisine. So in terms of regional food, I would say the places like Texas, NC and TN for their BBQ.

All I know is that Southern Cal has the best Mexican food...

NYC for sheer volume/variety is pretty hard to argue. But what is "signature" NYC beyond pizza, bagels, and Manhattans?

New Orleans is another excellent nomination.

Dallas, TX, actually has a great restaurant scene (although Cajun is surprisingly lacking, even though it's fairly close to Cajun country)...although in general you have to really pony up some big bucks for the fine dining.

I can tell you the most overrated scene: Las Vegas. Overpriced, underwhelming food from restaurants that have just slapped celebrity chef names on them.

SF, pretty much without doubt! In almost every farmer's market or produce isle I go to, we get our CA fruits and vegatables fresh cut with the morning's dew still on it.

Plus, we have the most restaurants per capita in the US and quite possibly the World.
San Francisco : Restaurants | Frommers.com

Quantity and quality wise, nothing beats SF.

Sorry, but I have never understood the appeal of that stuff. Gross.
In fairness, Atlanta's Varsity also eludes my understanding.
