Well, I'm confused. Is this about which cities are most known [that's what it sounds like in the OP] or Which cities define america??? It's all confusing to me. It seems everyone is arguing different points.
Anyways, my list:
Cities that make America:
1. New York [Finance]
2. Los Angeles [Entertainment]
3. Chicago [Transportation]
4. Houston [Oil/Energy]
5. San Francisco [Technology]
6. Boston [Education]
Kinda sad that the importance of education isn't a bit higher on the list.
As a native New Yorker (Born and raised in Brooklyn) I've always hated Boston, but that's only for stupid reasons (Sports teams) and it's not REAL hate, just sports "hate". (Go Yankees/Giants/Knicks!)
Boston is definitely the education center of America. If you wiped Boston off the map higher learning in America would suffer greatly. It should be somewhere in the top 5 imo.

I generally agree with this list but if I wanted to split hairs (and I will) I would say San Jose in favor of SF in terms of technological development. Otherwise its still pretty spot on given that SF and SJ are in the same area.

My list wasn't going in order. and Boston is big in medicine; I left that one off.
It is not reasonably disputable that Washington DC is in the top 5. Besides being the nation's capital, DC has the 3rd highest CSA GDP and the 4th highest CSA population.
San Francisco can possibly change places with Boston based on certain criteria. But that's about it.

I also agree with the top 4. As a Southerner, while Atlanta for me is the #1 citiy, it doesn't belong in the top 5 cities that make America. Without a doubt that belongs to San Francisco. Boston and Phily have great arguments, but I think San Francisco ranks higher, especially given the Bay Area. It has higher ed, high tech and biotech, recent and historical American cultural contributions, and I think it is more representative of America as a melting pot.
