There are 6 states that make up the New England states and I want to live in one of them. I drove throw them but don't know much about them except that I love greenery, falling leaves, rain, but not a whole lot of snow. I'm 64 retire and can't afford a house except in Maine. I need to live by a VA hospital so I thought I might rent an apartment of some type with a patio or small little yard for my dog. I could afford about $1200 a month. I'm living in Phoenix now and the heat and air pollution is getting to me. Any suggestions?

I'd recommend Manchester, New Hampshire which has a VA hospital/facility. You'll get more choices within your budget in terms of places to live, a larger city with plenty of services and things-to-do, plus the idyllic New England lifestyle you're looking for. I sent you a direct message with apartment listings that are dog-friendly in your price range.

Or consider Upstate NY too. My area has a VA Hospital and you can get a lot for $1200 a month here.

Also, the Syracuse metro area is one of the best for military retirees in the US

I second Manchester (though I may be biased as it is my original hometown).

Only problem you are going to run into is the "whole lot of snow".

If you are going to live north of Kentucky in general, prepare for lots of snow. Especially in the northeast.

Depends on where you live.

Where I grew up in NY, many areas were un-plowed dirt roads through hills or gorges.

I'd still say that the vast majority of Upstate NY is prepared for snow removal.
