There have been so many threads regarding who has the best downtown areas and people will list their top 3, 5, 10, or whatever, but will never give a reason as to why they feel a certain downtown area beats out another one. IMO, a great downtown will offer its residents and visitors with options, including shopping, entertainment, transportation, etc... I will start this thread with listing shopping options. What does your downtown area have to offer in terms of shopping?

MPLS-STPL reps; I'm sure I forgot a few so please update.

Clever. MPLS-STPL reps; I'm sure I forgot a few so please update.

You couldn't figure it out from my statement? I suppose you would have thought that I was referring to St. Paul though.

OK here's what I did. In Google maps, I zoomed into the city centers of Minneapolis, New York, San francisco, Chicago and San Francisco. Same zoom level, 1000 ft/inch. I panned the map to avoid water but include the CBD and the urban core in general. Then I Google searched 'store'. Here are the results. The actual numbers might fluctuate a bit from search to search.

1. NYC - 71,805
2. L.A. - 13,922
3. San Francisco - 12,800
4. Chicago - 9,818
5. Philly - 6,700
6. MNPLS/STPL - 2,700

Apologies in advance to anyone who thinks the search was too broad, doesn't like my methodology, or who wanted their city in the list.

NYC - store - Google Maps

LA - store - Google Maps

SF - store - Google Maps

Chi - store - Google Maps

Philly - store - Google Maps

MNPLS/STPL - store - Google Maps

There's a glitch, when setting it up the first result is for the whole city. If you zoom in and out a bit, the search refreshes and you get the proper number.

Toronto = 17,600

shop - Google Maps
