Over the past few years MD has become an extremely left winged state.

MD has:
Expanding gambling, a casino will open in Baltimore next year and in 2016 a 1 billion dollar Las Vegas style casino will open up in PG county, just south of D.C.

MD has repealed the death penalty

Medical Marijuana is legal in MD

In MD, illegal immigrants are allowed to pay in state tuition at state colleges

Illegal immigrants can now get driver licenses in the state of Maryland.

Gay marriage is legal in MD.

I feel as if MD is becoming a small east coast version of California, it'll probably be even more liberal than Cali by 2020.

Many states have a lot of gambling now (just look to the north of MD with PA and NJ) so using that one makes no sense.

However that and combination of the other thing I've named does make sense. Can you name one state that is doing what MD is doing right now? That and MD taxes the hell out of people for everything.

Its easier for Maryland to be more politically uniform because its so small, having 6-7 times less people than CA and is dominated by one metro region, Washington-Baltimore, which is racially diverse and has a very high proprortion of African Americans. All of these factors favor Democrats.

California, on the other hand is about 600 miles long and has differences in idealogy for that entire stretch. CA has many Liberals, but we also have areas that are either republican strongholds or lean to the right. We also have many people who lean Libertarian, as well as mamy Conservative Christians.

Despite public perception and the fact that California has a Liberal majority, the political landscape is not one dimensional.

California is more "iconically" liberal than Maryland. That's why you hear the term "California liberal" often. And obviously, California is a far larger state.

It will probably take quite some time for a state like Maryland to reach that kind of status politically in people's minds. Not many people who live outside of Maryland even know much about its political landscape. They are often surprised to find out. People tend to associate northeast liberalism with Massachusetts and New England more so than any other states.

California is home to the most liberal metro area in the nation - the SF Bay Area as well as the most liberal public colleges in the nation. It's also home to Hollywood which pushes a liberal agenda. California has become more liberal in recent years as Southern California was once moderate to Republican-leaning but today it is solidly left-leaning. Only inland California remains a conservative stronghold which is a small portion of the total population of the state. Maryland may be more liberal overall but I don't think it has vast areas as liberal as the SF Bay area or Berkeley.

I find it really disguising were trying to get a title as most liberal state.
When is the day coming where we can walk out in the streets with our assault rifles on our back naked?
Isnt the definition of a liberal someone that wants the government to grant limitless freedoms?
Plus doesn't this thread belong in the politics and other controversies forum?

why are you even chiming in here?

Where are you getting your definition of liberal anyway? Please share your source.

This^.

California probably has more "extremes" on either end of the political spectrum though.
