California has two powerful cities and while some think LA is the rival to NYC on every level many others feel its closer to rivaling SF bay area.

LA better competes with which of the aforementioned cities on these important categories; brand name, reputation, safety, infrastructure, wealth, education, economy, internationalism, political influence, etc. To be clear infrastructure means roads, trains, airports, etc and political influence asks of LA's political contributions to the country/world or its own state.

LA is in the same overall league as NYC but technically is between SF and NYC especially when you look at each city and its surrounding conurbation. LA and NYC are in the 10M> club (by a healthy margin) at the conurbation level whereas SF is around 7M at that level. But what the heck, they are all megacities.

Other than population, New York seems to be of a different league and class than Los Angeles.
I'm not sure what relevance population has though seeing as Mumbai has more people than New York City, London, Paris, but other than to a few very dumb people, it's quite clear to everyone that they clearly aren't cut from the same cloth.

LA is between NYC and San Francisco.

BTW, I just realized that San Francisco and D.C. are now alpha world cities, the same as LA. Wow!

Man, that'd be pretty cool to see Washington up there with the big dogs

as for the poll, LA is between New York and San Francisco.

If NYC rivals any city it would be London, Paris, Tokyo, Mumbai (maybe Chinese cities also). NYC and LA don't seem to rival. Actually, NYC doesn't seem to rival any city in the US, but between the two given options, I would say SF for financial businesses.

This. They may be different styles, but they are both monster cities with everything you might want to find. San Francisco is much smaller, and exerts far less influence on the country and world.

I've noticed rivalries with LA tend to be one sided, meaning Angelenos don't really care what others think. My friend in LA always mentions that when people in San Francisco knock LA.
