As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time in Midtown, it's a good neighborhood, but shouldn't be called the best. It's seriously lacking a lot. It's definitely clear that urban decay is limiting to potential of Midtown and really most of Detroit's neighborhoods. For one, there's not enough development going on to actually allow people to move into these neighborhoods. Two, the decay is really really depressing and really drags down the neighborhood. Like so:
But I think the first picture is seriously a huge limiting factor in making this an attractive neighborhood. And the whole half the neighborhood is like that south of where I took these pictures from. But...I'm not purely bashing it. Midtown has definitely got a cool bohemian-college vibe that isn't drowning in chain stores (at least not yet). I hope if development does come, it keeps that same vibe. Best? No. When it reaches its full potential? Oh yea most definitely.
