I don't like when people say outside of downtown and North Side that Chicago isn't urban.

Depends on where you're from it might make sense. For example, this French poster:

and most Chicagoans wouldn't tout West Humboldt park as one of the cities most desirable/urban destinations...

But in American standards Chicago as a majority is urban.

No. Well, not me at least.

As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time in Midtown, it's a good neighborhood, but shouldn't be called the best. It's seriously lacking a lot. It's definitely clear that urban decay is limiting to potential of Midtown and really most of Detroit's neighborhoods. For one, there's not enough development going on to actually allow people to move into these neighborhoods. Two, the decay is really really depressing and really drags down the neighborhood. Like so:

But then there's a nice little house next door.

And then around the corner there's some actual development.

But I think the first picture is seriously a huge limiting factor in making this an attractive neighborhood. And the whole half the neighborhood is like that south of where I took these pictures from. But...I'm not purely bashing it. Midtown has definitely got a cool bohemian-college vibe that isn't drowning in chain stores (at least not yet). I hope if development does come, it keeps that same vibe. Best? No. When it reaches its full potential? Oh yea most definitely.

I don't know about that, but I do have a suggestion for your Chicago list. I would add Gold Coast and maybe Old Town.

Gold Coast Historic District (Chicago)

Old Town, Chicago
