Chicago has the food, an NFL team, and a Great Lake is far superior to salt water.

Someone who says something like that probably isn't too familiar with Houston. Change two wheel carriage to a brand new Lexus or Acura, and you might have better credibility.

Having lived in Houston and spending time in the other three, I agree with this analogy. Houston offers a lot, with COL being a key differentiator, but it's simply not in the same category. Houston is the 6th largest metro (aiming for 5th), while the other three occupy the top spots in order with a considerable distance separating them from No. 4 DFW. It will be a while, if ever, that Houston challenges Chicagoland for No. 3.

What's sad though is that Houston is just as important as LA and Chicago and not lagging too far behind in terms of diversity.

actually, it's a bit hyperbolic, but Houston does not earn mention with NYC, Chicago and LA.

It's not as far behind as some make it out to be, and the carriage reference was just a little over the top.

GDP rankings:

2. Los Angeles

As far as culture, only a handful of cities in the country have permanent companies in all four performing arts: opera, theater, symphony and dance... and Houston is one of them. The HMNS and MFAH are a few of the most visited museums in the country. A few very large notable festivals and events, including where the Art Car Parade idea was basically born. One of the few cities in the country to have a Sundance Theater. Largest medical district in the world. Ranks third in the country in foreign consulates.
Income already ranks high, and grew faster than any other city in the nation for the last decade.
