SF the Bay Area and NorCal up to Humboldt County is still the beacon for hippies, there are many hippie towns and hippies living in mountainous communes/farms, it is their Mecca and Arcata is Medina. The hippie/new age values are still found everywhere in this region, though the hippie dream died long ago, the candle still burns strong (so does the herb)

Just about any liberal city in a medical marijuana state is going to be a hippie magnet. Nothing wrong with that, it's common sense. SF is one of the biggest cities and it's had the legal herb for the longest as well as all the history. Why people from SF are trying to deny this is beyond me. Certainly SF is not 50% hippie, but it's the hippe Mecca for sure. Most muslims don't live in the real Mecca, yet the place overflows with them. Same thing SF, so the comparison is 100% appropriate.

Exactly! Unfortunately gentrification has shifted the culture in SF from being a leader in progressive social concerns to more technology based and mainstream corporatism. Maybe Oakland can pick up where San Francisco left off.

Modern day hippies move to Portland or Eugene. They've now realized how expensive San Francisco is.

As far as major cities go sure... but you can follow the hippie trail north all the way from SF. See my other post. I always thought Portland was more hipster/lgbt/indie stuff than hippie though.

What are you talking about? Austin has had it's own hippy scene since the 1960s...although these days it's gotten more yuppie/hipster as well.

SF stopped being a hippy mecca the moment the dot com boom started. Portland is beyond hippie, portland is wookie.

Urban Dictionary: wookie

I am laughing so hard right now. However, I do have to disagree that a wookie and a hippie sound alike by the definition provided. The definition of the link states......

"A lifeless idiot whose whole existence consists of following around jam bands and not showering or shaving. When they're not panhandling or trying to rip people off, they're selling veggie burritos or grilled cheese to fund their useless existence. They stand for nothing and care about nobody else. (Not to be confused with a hippie. A hippie is someone who lives a certain lifestyle due to their beliefs. Hippies often shower and have jobs.)"

HAHA

There is something about the hippie culture that makes me extremely angry. I just can't take the organic granola eating, lazy people who don't want a job, surfing, camping, hiking, organic shopping, be one with nature, bob marley brraids flowing fluently through the wind, peace/love/harmony attitude, cheap clothes, playing hackie sack, etc. They basicly stand for nothing and don't care about another human being, but want to save the planet. I am sorry but this makes culture makes me sick and very ANGRY!
