I know I've heard time and time again that New York City, for the most part, was dirt cheap in the late 70s. I've heard that San Francisco was extremely affordable prior to the tech-boom and yuppification that happened in the early to mid 90s. I know for a fact that New Orleans, now one of the most expensive cities in the South, was much cheaper (in terms of housing) before Hurricane Katrina.

What cities were the most expensive (especially in terms of housing) in the 1970s to 1990s, and are they still expensive today? Have any cities actually dropped off in terms of relative cost?
