These cities tend to have bad reputations for crime, poverty, and blight. Which one is truly in the most trouble for the future—and are any actually doing well, and should not be grouped in this list? Are there any others that should be included?

An empty list! What a relief - no worries!

Ooops. My browser didn't display the list. Smart-ass comment withdrawn (or in Trump-speak, "I disavow").

City proper? Probably still Detroit. Some improvement but still ridiculously decayed and troubled.

Metro area? Maybe Chicago? The only major metro with population loss.

Detroit and it seems Baltimore is having a rough patch.

Chicago certainly doesn't belong on this list. Per capita it's crime rate isn't as high as say Indianapolis or Atlanta. It's also an alpha world city.

On the whole maybe not, but it does have a gang problem that would make LA blush.

Uh... That doesn't negate that Chicago faces serious issues as of now... issues that in some ways mirror Baltimore, Detriot, etc

Chicago might not seem as bad now as say a Detroit, but that is a financial time bomb waiting to go off. Detroit is the opener, Chicago is the main attraction coming in the next 20 years.

Let's not conflate the city government's finances with the citiy's economy. Detroit's economy was tied inextricably to the American auto industry that left. Chicago does not have those problems.
