Which city has the best skyline, amenities, education, economy, nightlife, and history? Oh and feel free to add more pictures. It was difficult to find a far out picture of Raleigh.
Amenities: toss up
Education: Raleigh
Economy: slight edge to Raleigh because of its status as the state capital.
Nightlife: toss up
History: Birmingham
Raleigh in every category except History. Raleigh is very much New South and progressive, and is growing toward something much much greater. I think for Birminham it's history is a blessing and a curse one that has hindered what it might have been otherwise.

I fail to see the blessing, but the curse is quite obvious.
Birmingham is like a person who wants to do more for themselves, but somehow the past holds them back.

It's not really state capital status that gives Raleigh an edge, but RTP which is a huge jobs magnet, being the largest research park in the world. State leaders were very progressive and visionary in establishing it. Without RTP, Raleigh would be half the size it is today (or less) and much slower-growing.

Interesting that I've said as much a few other times elsewhere and get blasted for perpetuating a supposedly outdated stigma that winds up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, as if I were personally responsible for the city's history. I think the city's history holds it back mainly because of lackluster, and in some cases, downright corrupt city leadership that fails to articulate and implement a progressive roadmap for the city's future.
Birmingham is too small town minded which has held them back. Birmingham single handedly boosted Atlanta to what it is today. Delta wanted to build their hub in Birmingham first. Six Flags even wanted to go to Birmingham first. They turned down both. Hindsight is 20/20 they say...... When Delta wanted to build their hub, Birmingham and Atlanta were around the same size. Makes you think doesn't it.
Raleigh by a long shot. I visited Birmingham in 2008 and wasn't impressed.
