Both are okay. St. Louis is more than twice the size of Memphis, so there's a lot more to do. Memphis seems more laid-back. Both are notorious for crime. Memphis is my favorite southern city... but on a national scale, it's average to me. I guess it's a draw.
Memphis does have the Cardinals' AAA team and enjoys it in the nation's best AAA facility. It also has an up and coming successful NBA team which St. Louis folks can come to see when they want to enjoy pro basketball. Memphis IMO has the most attractive Downtown of the two with big overnight Paddlewheelers headquartered on the riverfront beginning next year.
Now when you all say St. Louis has more people are you referring to the Metro or is it just a straight city comparison? If it's straight city, Memphis is twice the size of St. Louis. It would be a close call, the temperature in Memphis is obviously better and might give the slight edge in food. I think the other amenities that I would look for definitely points to St. Louis

It's obviously a metro area comparison. I'd disagree about the weather -- the mid-south is notoriously humid and full of bugs, so I'd have to go with St. Louis. I think a fair argument can be made the Memphis has had more of a cultural influence, particularly as it relates to music, and I'd agree that Memphis BBQ > St. Louis BBQ. Still, to me St. Louis is the more aethetically pleasing city. It's also wealthier, more educated and has a better corporate base.
