New York is obvious
DC, Although not as popular here, it is more Internationally known.
SF, i'm not sure how this came to be, but this city has become a symbol of liberal America and our principles of celebrating diversity.
LA Iconic for the american dream of Hollywood.
i would say 5 is a tie between Philly and Boston, for being big parts of american history.
Chicago would maybe be 6 because its big?
Los Angeles, never been there but I feel like it is from TV. HOLLYWOOD
Las Vegas, somewhere I have been. Its Sin City, the strip
DC, first thought pops into my head is MLK saying I have a dream on the Mall, doesn't get much more iconic then that
NYC, World Trade Center/Empire State Building, enough said.
SF, basically the bridge, to me though the Seattle needle is just as recognizable growing up. I have so many friends that post pictures near that damn bridge though.
NYC
LA
Chi
DC
SF
I consider these to be the greatest cities in America, & I think they're great because they are iconic. Boston & Miami would be next in my mind
I like the MacMillan definition of "iconic" - very famous and well known, and believed to represent a particular idea. I'd take it in the present context as "what a city is known for", which could be different in each case. Just looking at music:
New York: Broadway Show Tunes, Tin Pan Alley
New Orleans: Jazz/Dixieland
Chicago: Electric Blues
Detroit: Soul
Seattle: Grunge
San Francisco: Acid Rock/Psychedelic Music
Los Angeles: Hollywood Musicals, Surfer Music
Philadelphia: Doo Wop, American Bandstand
Nashville: Country
Memphis: Rock-n-Roll, Rockabilly, R&B, Trad. Blues
Boston: Classical Music
St. Louis: Classic Blues (W.C. Handy/Bessie Smith)
It is interesting that everyone is saying the White House is the most iconic building in DC.. I personally would think the Capitol Building
