I don't think either city is bland they just have a different urban style of character. It would be bland and boring if all cities were the same in this country.
It's kinda like comparing Philly and Vegas. Philly is very unique but in comparison it's bland. Boston doesn't stand out as much as New Orleans. I mean no offense to any from Boston but the stereotype of Boston folk is very bland, boring, and vanilla. I've had this discussion with plenty of people and not all agree that that's what people from Boston are like but everyone agrees that's the stereotype and in my opinion it's a stereotype for a reason.

Did you invent this stereotype? Because I've seriously never heard it before in my life. I've heard Boston is a bunch of drunk Irish people or Harvard blue bloods...but never that it's a bland, boring, vanilla city.

I would not say that Philly is bland compared to Vegas. If anything, it's the other way around considering that much of Vegas was built just in the past few decades.

Extreme, but I generally agree with you. New Orleans is hands down the most unique city in the country.
"Many tiers below Boston" ... Really? In what ways, i would like to know in what ways makes Boston tiers above New Orleans.
According to the list of "World Cities"; Boston is quite a few tiers above New Orleans (and many other midsized US cities too). GaWC - The World According to GaWC 2010
Then there's the densities of New Orleans vs Boston (and the pre-Katrina densities were not much better).
And for those of us who don't really understand (or just don't care about) stats and numbers, here are google streetview images of both town centers. New Orleans Boston
Boston being in a "higher tier" does NOT mean that Boston is a "better city". It simply means that Boston has more people which leads to a larger media market and a larger GDP. In other words, Boston is not in the same weight class as New Orleans. However, you should be proud that New Orleans is even being compared to Boston. I can think of SEVERAL cities within your town's weight class that would NOT get this much respect in a thread vs Boston (no matter how many skyscrapers and condos they build). That fact alone makes New Orleans the winner of this thread IMO.
Does anyone know if this Borders in downtown Boston still open? I had taken this photo July of last year. It seems like they have closed a lot of stores around the country and gone of business or something.
It's closed.
