Monica Hesse and Dan Zak (Washington Post) with their "2012 In/Out List":

The 2012 In/Out List - The Washington Post

OUT: Portland. IN: Pittsburgh. (Put a bird on it? Get lost.)
Comparisons aside, I do think Pittsburgh is the urban it-girl for 2012.

Is there even an article for this? Or is it just 'Portland OUT Pittsburgh IN'?

It's about time Portland lost some of it's "in" quotient. The hype has been a little much over the last few years.

I've never been to Pittsburgh so I can't compare the two, but from what I've seen and heard, it looks like a great mid-sized city. It's up there on my list of places to check out--but I really like the photos I've seen of the downtown situated on the rivers along with the hilly residential neighborhoods...sort of reminds me of a more East Coast/Midwestern Portland in a way. Great sports town from what I can wager as well...

I hope you do visit sometime, if you do I would suggest riding the incline up to Mt. Washington at night, beautiful view of the city. Portland has always looked like a beautiful city to me so I can see where you come from with those comparisons

There are some parallels between the two cities, and I mean visually. The first time I set foot in Portland I thought it sort of looks like Pittsburgh; the hills, the river, and all the bridges and comparable size. Worlds apart in many other ways but that hilly river city element with multiple bridges make them strikingly similar. Also much like in Portland from the tunnel on the Sunset Freeway 26 coming from Beaverton borrowed through the West Hills and then revealing the city from the portal like an entrance, Pittsburgh has a highway just like that with a tunnel through the hills and then bam..... there's the city, though the view from the portal in Pittsburgh is a bit more impressive.
