100% correct. GR is conservative and is very family centered (as is most of West Michigan).

Grand Rapids is overall a bit cooler than Lincoln, but Lincoln has wider extremes for their record highs and lows than Grand Rapids. This year for example Lincoln's lowest temp is -5 while GR's is 3 above. It is few and far between where Grand Rapids high temps in the summer will approach 100.

Michigan is strange when it comes to openness to newcomers. It is more what you see really is what you get. Not a lot of show or flash. When you make a friend they are a true friend and not just there for the good times and desert you when/if the going get a bit rough. Not real outgoing overall, but the underlying persona is friendly. A smile and friendly hi goes a long way and will bring out the same in the the person here.

Grand Rapids is getting more "artsy" every year and holds an art show that is the largest art prize purse in the World. This is from their site

ArtPrize 2011 began Sept. 21 with 1,582 artists from 39 countries and 43 U.S. states installing their work at 164 venues in a three-square-mile district in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I would consider Fort Wayne, IN as an option. It is pretty socially conservative and is nicknamed the City of Churches. At the same time, it is a moderately sized city, has a growing arts scene, and has a low crime rate. It is also only around a 3 hour drive to Chicago and a less than 2 hour drive to Indianapolis.
