Central Park, though Balboa is great.

Golden Gate Park is another similar park - right in the middle of SF.

Balboa is bigger, less manicured (in a good way) and is home to the San Diego Zoo. Comparing the parks by themselves (none of this "it's in Manhattan") Balboa is a little better IMO.

I personally like balboa park better. While central park is super impressive, I just find Balboa park to be very unique and beautiful.

I may be from California, but Central Park is the most beautiful park I've ever seen IMO.

Central Park, Golden Gate Park, and Grant Park are the best urban big city parks I have ever seen in the U.S.

I think it's the radical contrast between the noisy and extreme density of NYC to the sylvan quiet (relative) and winding paths amongst trees that makes Central Park so appealing and it is real nice but not that different from other large urban parks.

Taken on its own Balboa park has much more geographic, topographical and developed/natural diversity that makes it more interesting. You've got the museum complex right out of Granada Spain on the Prado, The Old Globe playhouse complex, adjacent tropical canyons of the zoo and Japanese garden, wooded glens and grassy knolls of the west side, miles of trails amongst the steep canyons of native coastal sage scrub for mtn. biking/hiking in Florida canyon, Morley field sports complex, frisby golf and two golf courses and then the wilder canyon edges on the east side.

I feel very lucky to live right on its edge, the coyotes, foxes, hawks and owls all adding a wonderful wildness to the city environment and ammenities just steps away. Its not the UES and the Met, (and the Jackie O. reservoir, The Sheep Meadow/Ramble etc...are all wonderful) but then again I don't need to be a 1%er to live right on one of the best urban parks in the world.

Balboa is awesome (and a better comparison would be to Forest Park in Saint Louis), Central park is just more awesome.
