Opinions are like *ssholes. However, we can get a general idea of how the world views your city based upon thousands upon tens of thousands of data points. I stumbled upon a cool website that more or less gives you the percentage of people in the social media world (Twitter and Facebook) that either LOVE or HATE whatever topic there is you can possibly think of. In this case, I thought it would be cool to try cities. You may have to try different iterations of your city's name. Just thought this would be interesting. So, here goes.

The website is: Amplicate - Counting Your Opinion

My city is San Francisco.
"San Francisco" 89% Love/ 11% Hate
"sanfrancisco" 92% Love/ 8% Hate

Hahaha... I'm not surprised. Frankly, I don't care. Which is also the sentiment of many who live here and is probably why fewer than half of the people who posted "love" Boston. I love Boston for its apathy towards those who don't like it.

Haha, I imagine sports play a HUGE part of this in the cases of Boston, Philly, and Dallas. Everyone hates their teams and their fans suck. :P

This site looks to be as useful and accurate as the polls on City v City.

At best, city-data can give you a couple hundred opinions. This is a way to get tens, even hundreds of thousands of general opinions. Of interest to me is how the World perceives a place. Nothing is perfect. However, all the drawbacks using this method would be universal and apply to every place. And since this site loves tiering cities. Here are my approximations based off of thousands upon thousands of opinions. Using a few well known citys to give you the general global tastes.

Tier 1 - Loved by 90-100%
NYC 91% Love
SF 90% Love

Tier 2 - Loved by 80-90%
Austin 89% Love
MIN 89% Love
LA 88% Love
SD 87% Love
LV 85% Love
CHI 84% Love
SEA 84% Love
ATL 81% Love
DC 80% Love

Tier 3 - Loved by 70-80%
MIA 74% Love
CLE 72% Love
DET 70% Love

Tier 4 - Loved by 50-70%
HOU 69% Love
OAK 69% Love
ORL 68% Love
PHI 65% Love
PIT 54% Love

More Hated than loved - Loved by <50%
DAL 49% Love
BOS 46% Love

That both Tier 1 cities are almost universally loved came as no surprise. These are also the two most expensive cities in the US. People are willing to pay a lot to live here, so can you really argue that this is incorrect?

Tier 2 consists of generally well thought of cities as well.

Tier 3 and 4's lukewarm opinions also came as no surprise.

All in all, I found no surprises in this excercise, except maybe Boston and Dallas. I did not know that they had such a negative cloud concerning them in the general consensus.

Nothing's 100% accurate. I just thought the forum should have an idea of how it all stacks up based on some evidence. Not sure why some of you sound so defensive. It's not like it changes anything. Make of it what you will.
