Currently, I live in Missouri and I love it here. The natural beauty is amazing, the cost of living is very low. The down side is that wages are low too, and there is no ocean close by.
I have lived in Texas, Louisiana, California, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, North Carolina and Alabama - oh, and Colorado. In each case, there are always good things and bad things about each place. Even Colorado, which is probably the place that I liked LEAST of all, has a few good things. I just can't think of any good things at the moment.....
Given a choice where to live...I'd pick Florida. It has the beach (which I love) and it is warm and sunny most days. As for hurricanes....you get plenty of notice to get the heck out.
Lived in Florida over 7 years, the hurricanes usually were hard to predict, many panicked and it would go further north. As long as the house was secured we never had a problem, in Boca Raton FL. Ameilia Island is also beautiful, right off the ocean in NE corner, close to Jekyll Island, Georgia.
i've lived in PA, MA, and WA. I'd say PA is the best. good cost of living, beautiful state, philly is an awesome city. definitely the most under-rated of the 3 states. WA is cool too though. I live in MA right now and it's not as good as everyone thinks. Most people here haven't lived anywhere else so they just assume it's fantastic.
I have lived in Southern California, loved the weather and the beach, not so much the cost of living, the pollution and the density of people. I lived in Las Vegas, I didn't like the weather (far to hot day and night), the casinos, the trash flying around everywhere, it is a parasite. I lived in Portland and Rockway Beach, Oregon, the scenery is beautiful, nice neighborhoods in Portland, good drivers, lots of dog parks (all free of course) and very bike friendly. Cost of living in Portland is to high, the autumn, winter and spring is very rainy and often overcast, the summers are dry, sunny and not to hot.
We lived in Tulsa, OK and got the hell out of there as soon as possible.
Now we live in St. Louis, MO and it is pretty nice, except hardly any free dog parks and lots of them are lousy, not very bike friendly and for my taste to hilly, some nice parks, weather up till now (we came last autumn) was pretty great, the drivers are pretty bad, the streets are awful, lets see what the spring will bring. Tornadoes scare me and the season has started. It seems earlier than usual or is it?
And everywhere I meet friendly people!
Boston is nice I was there a yr for graduate school. Expensive and cold though.
What in particular do u like about Philly?
I never get people who live in the same state for 40 years and act like its a perfect haven, there are so many good choices...
i think philly has everything.. big city, good cost of living, awesome arts, museums, culture, sports, nightlife. 1 hour from the ocean. close to DC and NY. I just think it's an underrated east coast city, whereas Boston is a bit overrated.

Portland sounds beautiful.
Here is a link for The Crystal Coast NC. Looks beautiful. They have many dog parks also.
I've lived in Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Alaska. Texas is very hot, has no snow, and has little public land for outdoor recreation. Central North Carolina has pleasant weather, but still no snow. Florida is hot, humid, crowded, snowless, and beautiful. I miss a lot of places down there, but don't ever want to be there between April and November again. Coastal Alaska is cold, windy, cloudy, drizzly, and snowy, and there's a small but real possibility that you could drown in a river or be eaten by a bear. And it's absolutely amazing. I love it, but a lot of people wouldn't.
