It's hard to say Detroit is not the most important, because of the auto industry and its impact on the world. This is a great question actually, because I can see the merit in all 4 cities:
Detroit -- auto mecca of the world
Miami -- major port and international gateway/tourist destination
Seattle -- tech superstar (along with SF/SJ) with a huge presence in aviation as well
Atlanta -- the "Twin Cities" of the South, meaning it has a highly diversified economy with a multitude of Fortune 500 companies. Is regionally and culturally highly significant.
I say Detroit, for now....but Atlanta, Miami and Seattle are right there and between those three, I'm having a hard time giving the edge to one of them.

Detroit is home to US auto makers but I am still surprised some people have picked it over any of the other cities. Besides for two failed car companies it has nothing. Well two failed companies and a well ran one in Ford. Lets not forget Chrysler is owned by Italian Fiat now. And GM by everyone who pays taxes. Detroit has been on the down fall since the 1970s and has not stopped. Chrysler and GM have been horribly ran companies and failures IMO. And I would argue that Detriot is the Auto Mecca of the world. I guess maybe for one city. I look at Wolfsburg as the auto mecca being home to VW.
But given Fords historical significance I can see what you mean. But I just don't see Detroit today, beating out any of the other cities. Historically, 30 years ago fine. But today I just don't see it.
Georgia tech isnt on the level of UM, UW, UMiami in any sense, GT has an acceptance rate of 79% they practically let everybody in because they are not selective. UM is the best of the group and strong selling point for the Detroit metro area

It has less to do with people thinking domestically or internationally and everything to do with this site by and large being a joke where people just vote for the same few cities regardless of the poll.

In this case, I don't think so. Looking at who's doing the voting (which this poll enables you to do) pretty much demonstrates that. It's way more than the Atlanta posters voting for Atlanta.
