That is a great question.
For Florida I think the top two are easy in Miami and Orlando. After that I guess I would go with Tampa. So Tampa number 3 for FL IMO.

4 and 5 Jacksonville and tallahassee.

For New York, its Buffalo. NYC and Albany are ahead in importance.

for New Jersey, its Newark, Trenton and Atlantic City.

Albany and Trenton are both the political centers of the state.

HM to New Brunswick for Jersey.

Well being the state capital automatically lends Harrisburg an extra degree of importance. Furthermore, it's logistically superior to Allentown because it's convenient not only to Philadelphia and New York, but also to Baltimore and Washington DC. Allentown is convenient to the former two, of course, but not the latter two.

1.Baltimore-the powerhouse of the Baltimore metro, a major city to American history, one of the premier areas on the world for medical care and will soon have the greatest medical research park on the east coast and US arguably.
2. Bethasda-close connections with D.C. with major HQ including Lockheed Martin, it's probably the wealthiest MD city besides Potomac, the Walter Reed hospital is located there and etc
3. Annapolis-Capital of MD, Capital of the US at one point, and played a role in religious freedom in America.

1. Charlotte-arguably one of the most important in America because it is/was the second most important banking center.
2. Raleigh/Durham-yet another important city to America because it's the silicon valley of the east coast, and it's the capital of NC
3. Greensboro/Winston-a major hub, the furniture capital of the world, the states third largest city, and a manafacturing hub.

Although San Antonio is bigger the obvious answer is Austin for Texas.

1. Houston- Largest City, Economic Powerhouse, Huge industries
2. Dallas- 3rd largest city, economic powerhouse
3. Austin- 4th largest city, Capital, Best on Education
4. San Antonio- 2nd Largest City, popular with tourists
5. Fort Worth- 5th largest city, great with arts and entertainment

El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, College Station, Tyler, Corpus Christi, Mc Allen, and others are all on their way up, but the big 5 for now is clear

I wondered if this thread was going to turn into a Chattanooga / Knoxville smackdown. Sure you've got the aquarium and a VW plant but we have UT and Neyland Stadium. The Sevier county Tourist-industrial complex is in our SMSA and that influences a LOT of vacations. Plus we are a bit bigger, though I realize some years it seems you are gaining on us.

I consider Nashville is the #1 most influential city in TN. Having the capital and being centrally located overrides Memphis' size.
