Rochester/Monroe County NY is pretty impressive, but it does have a strong innovative community due to its history(Kodak, Bausch and Lomb and Xerox).

Unsurprising that Silicon Valley is in the lead. Tech is really humming along.

The Bay Area murders the competition, once again (unsurprisingly):

1 San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA 10,074
3 San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA 6,290
40 Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA 514

Interesting stats, thanks for posting. Nice change of pace from population, GDP, and skyline arguments.

San Jose and SF in the top three is what I expected. I didn't realize LA had so much going on in this field though. San Diego is also impressive at #7. California really rules this area.

I would like to see the South do better. Texas does well with three cities (Austin, Houston, & Dallas) in the top 15, but aside from Texas only Atlanta and Raleigh are in the top 20 representing the South. Nashville doesn't even make the list despite a decent presence in the health care industry, and Charlotte isn't on there either.

On a related note, here is an interesting article about global patents. It shows what a huge percentage are by EU, US, Japan, and China.
