What exactly is your definition of major city??

New Orleans, Detroit, Oakland, Memphis, Cleveland are all major cities to me and they have worse crime rates than Chicago and Philly. Hell, every city in America has crime in the city proper or in the metro. There is no exception. Even though New York and LA have historically low crime rates, they still have high crime areas in the metro. New York has Newark, LA has Compton, etc. etc.

But I agree I would like it if the US was more like Europe or Canada in crime rates, but I think you are a little harsh in constantly picking on the same cities when this is a country wide phenomenon that is not unique to these two cities.

Dallas - 82

last one

Quote:
At 11:30 a.m. Saturday (7/21), Dallas Police responded to a shooting at a club located in the 10300 block of Lombardy Lane.
Officers arrived to find a man shot and killed inside the club. Witnesses reported the man was sitting at the bar when he was approached by a Latin male and shot. The suspect fled the scene in a white Chrysler 300.
The suspect is described as a Latin male about 30 to 40-years-old, 5’3 and 135 pounds. At the time of the shooting he was wearing a black cowboy hat, black shirt and blue jeans.
The Dallas police are asking anyone with information, regarding the shooting or suspect, to call the homicide unit at 214-671-3661.

Right, the point just being that whoever wrote the article doesn't understand how stats work I guess. There have been more sheer numbers of homicide victims in Chicago compared to US troops in Afghanistan......but there are also 30 times as many people in Chicago than troops in that country. That's why we use RATES of crime. The article shouldn't be saying the murder rate is higher, just the gross numbers.

That's like saying the murder rate in New York City is higher than New Orleans because New York City had 450 murders and New Orleans had 175. No - the rate is not higher.

At least the trend here is moving in the right direction. Through March 31st homicides were up 60% from last year with shootings up something like 50%. Through this past weekend the increase is down to around 29% for homicides and 7% for shootings.

The interesting thing about it is that all other crimes are down between 2% and 15%. Overall crime is down almost 10% compared to last year. The only crimes that are up is homicides and shootings. You can really tell the big issue here was taking down all those gang leaders last year. That cause the gangs to split into another 150 factions compared to what was there last year. You have tons of teenagers and guys in their young 20's who are chasing each other around shooting.

Toronto is at #31 for 2012. It's been a pretty bad summer so far here.

If things keep going at the same pace they are now, Camden, NJ and Flint, MI will both experience the highest number of murders ever in those cities.

Flint (population 102,434) has had 40 murders so far this year, and at this rate will end the year with 71, with a murder rate of 69.31 per 100,000. Flint's current deadliest year was 2010, with 64 murders.

Camden (population 77,344) has had 36 murders so far this year, and at this rate will end the year with 64, with a murder rate of 82.75 per 100,000. Camden's current deadliest year was 1995, with 58 murders.

Wow that stat is alarming after the Toronto comment. Both of those cities don't even have a million folks and have a higher body count smh.

^ Ya Toronto should end the year with about 55 murders. But the population is over 2.6 million people so with all things considered, that's not bad. It equals out to a murder rate of 2.12 per 100,000.

I drove through Flint at dusk once. Didn't look as bad as Detroit and even had some pretty nice architecture among the homes and downtown buildings. But it still felt like a town that was past its prime and had no support other than the auto industry. I certainly feel for Flint and hope there's better times ahead.
