Then there's London, with a similar population and 120 murders for the entire year in 2011. Highest in England, though. Murder rate is given in the UK is given per million rather than per 100,000. London's murder rate is 16.7.

Shoulda said "by big city American standards". Yeah, London shames all of our big cities in this category. Tokyo as well.

Ranking in the survey is established by the number of homicides per 100,000 of the population.

Dublin murder rate is one of Europe's highest - News, Frontpage - Herald.ie

(Lithuania) 8.13 per 100,000

(Riga) 7.5 per 100,000

(Limerick) 7.3 per 100,000

(Glasgow) 5.3 per 100,000

(Belfast) 3.3 per 100,000

(Dublin) 3.0 per 100,000

(London) 2.2 per 100,000

I have a feeling since there is no gang leadership, separate neighborhoods are starting their own drug rings, then when they overlap that is what is causing them to kill each other.
primitive minds would be the only explanation...

Gentrification has swept through this city like a wave now though and in 2012, DC will most likely record less than 100 muders. Who knows when the last time that happened.........
Yea, Philly needs that type of Gentrification A.S.A.P...

Philly IS seeing large swaths of Gentrification, but with a close proximity to NYC, a rough fall from De-industrialization and a larger city square mileage wise, it will take longer to gentrify and/or redevelop.

Right across the river, from Detroit, is the city of Windsor, Ontario. Population 275,000.

Get this,,,,,,, Windsor went TWO FULL YEARS, without a murder.

How can two cities, that are directly across the border, be so different ?

Its Canada, of course. No hand guns, no gangs, and no drugs.

Toronto.

Does anyone have historical data on Miami?

I thought I remember reading somewhere that between 1979 and 1987, they had at least 250-300 murders a year.

The larger numbers of murders people talk about for Miami are usually the County/Sheriff Dept. total.

Peak year (that I could find).

1980
----
Murder - 220
Rape - 325
Robbery - 6,890
Agg Assault - 4,039
