People are always talking about the big ocean, bay and great lake waterfronts in cities like Chicago, Boston, Seattle, New York, San Francisco, Miami, etc., but we never really think about the fact that there are riverfronts out there in our river cities that aren't as big, but can be just as unique, scenic, and important.
What are your favorite city riverfronts? I would judge by how scenic, green, uniquely set up, historic, economically important, and unique to the city it is. Also I would go by how well one can see downtown from the river, the river traffic, and what special features the river has.
I chose the top 25 biggest (by metro size) solely river-based cities to put in the poll. If your city isnt on there, just comment about it.
My top choice is Minneapolis (slight bias here), because of the history of the riverfront, the fact that it has one of the only major waterfalls on the Mississippi, the set up of the locks and dams, the bridges, historic and new, the old and historic flour mills that line the river mixed with new buildings like the Guthrie theater and residential high rises along the river, Nicollet Island, the trails, walkways, trees, parks, paddlewheel boats, there just isnt much of anything wrong with the riverfront. I offers everything. Nobody can beat St. Anthony Falls. the falls were the economic basis of the entire city, because they fueled the sawmill and flour milling industries, and made Minneapolis the flour capital of the world. I also think it was amazing how quickly and well they cleaned the riverfront up, even though it was the site of a major bridge disaster in 2007.
San antonio doesnt have much of a river, more so a periodically dry stream, but i probably should have included it. Also, Dallas and Houston are first because they are the largest river metros.
