Who concentrates their wrath on Los Angeles? "Hollywood" is often just a reference to big time media execs. People could not care less about what people in Los Angeles are doing.
Now San Francisco is a different story. There are a lot of people in America who truly loathe its "way of life."

I'd say a lot of people, too. There are a lot of people who dislike or suspect they would dislike Los Angeles because it is too superficial and shallow with a huge amount of celebrity worship, and all of this would be based on little more than stereotypes and the actions of a small segment of the population. It truly inspires loathing in people, and sometimes in people who have never even set foot in Los Angeles but are already certain they would hate that aspect. This has occurred a few times with various people I've met in NYC and elsewhere when I've mentioned in from Los Angeles originally, so I assume it isn't a too uncommon belief.

Most cities have a bad reputation on certain things.
Atlanta is too country.
Philadelphia is too dirty.
New York is too much of a rat race.
LA is too superficial.
I think that's different from "wrath" and outright hatred, however. Again, I think the only city in America that is truly hated is San Francisco, and that's largely for being the poster child city for Gay America. The words "San Francisco" send shivers up the spine of hard core conservatives. It's like dropping J. Edgar Hoover's name in front of former Black Panthers. San Francisco represents everything many people hate about what they think America is becoming (i.e., gay, tree-hugging, America-hating liberals).
Even Hillary Clinton gave Barack Obama a lot of flak for making a statement about how Pennsylvanians "cling to their guns and religion" at a fundraiser in San Franciscoooo. I mean, the Clinton campaign made a big deal of that in 2008. It was bad enough that he made a statement about people "clinging" to their guns. But the problem was compounded by the fact that he made the statement in SAN FRANCISCO of all places.

And back to the original point: When people scream "Paris Hilton!" at the mention of L.A., do they realize no one even heard of the chick until NYC made her a celebrity? With Page 6 reveling in her underage partying? I'd say the Preppy Murder even laid the groundwork for this whole fascination with spoiled teenage privilege. Then it was MTV/VH1--based in New York--that gave her a TV show! I know nobody wants to take the blame for Paris Hilton , but with great cultural influence there's some big blame to go where it really belongs.

Yea, but that kind of idiocy gets flung into LA's corner of the world. I've met some people who were pretty vocal with their disgust of Hollywood and Los Angeles. It's kind of funny given that it's such a blue collar city.
I don't even think LA's the "center of American culture". There is no "Center of American Culture". I never said LA was the "center of American culture". I just think both cities influence America and the world on the same level. They both influence America greatly, but aren't really what I'd call the "center". America's too culturally vast and divided for their to be a "center". But all in all, NYC and LA would have the best arguments, but still no cigar.

I was shocked when I found out Paris Hilton's from NYC. I don't know why? Hilton Hotels are HQ'ed in NYC.
