People can also migrate to other cities domestically. For instance, I know the Hmong population primarily lives in 3 or 4 places in the country (primarily): MN, WI, NC and CA. Hmong who immigrate to the U.S. via another city not in those states often migrate there soon after. This may be what's causing the discrepancy.
was gonna say that too but I forgot. Getting old and all.
The census lists the total number of Nigerians in the US at about 65K, but everyone knows that is a really low low ball.
Although it seems high, the Nigerian community here lists their community at about 150K in Houston Metro alone.
There are more than 12,000 Nigerians in Houston, according to the latest Census data, a figure sociologists and Nigerian community leaders say is a gross undercount. They believe the number to be closer to 100,000.
Its tough to really know beyond the foreign born population itself.
I saw an article from the NBC affiliate in Dallas that listed our Indian population at 400,000 quoting some local Indian community leader. Of course, the foreign born number is closer to 100,000.
Im assuming they are simply guestimating the number of 2nd, 3rd, generation etc?

well they do have festivals and stuff like that don't they?
how large do YOU think thee Indian pop there is?
For me the 150K Nigerian population is bloated but 12K is a really low ball. There are 12K Nigerians in Mission Bend alone. I would estimate the pop at about 90-100K or ten percent of the black population based on personal interactions.
I know its not scientific but when you are talking about diversity, feel is a factor than actuallity. What is the point in a bunch of a certain ethnicity if they don't exert a feel of their culture on the metro

Like HtownLove said, Nigerians believe there are far more of them in Houston than the numbers say. I remember reading in the chronicle a few years back about an article about Nigerians in Houston and it pointed out that many leaders believed that there was over 300,000 Nigerians in the Houston. I think it's bloated. But I would not be surprised if they are undercounted. Many Nigerians believe Houston actually does have the highest population of Nigerians in the US.
Also, I read another article in the Chronicle that stated that Colombian leaders believe there are over 100,000 of them in the Houston area as well. This was back in 2008. I would attempt to find those articles for you. But I think they've been deleted.

The Indian community does have festivals here as well as their own FM radio station (104.9), but I still would have to question how they would come up with the 400k figure. They had to get it from somewhere, but I wonder what method they use.
Not trying to nitpick, I know the Nigerian community in Houston is very large. It just seems like its too easy to throw numbers around and thats in no way specific to the Nigerians in Houston or the Indians in Dallas. Though I do agree "feel" is a factor.
If immigration stays the same each year then in 10 years the NY area gains 1.8 million new immigrants. If it could ever reverse its net migration that would be 3 million in population growth each census
The eventual outmigration from NYC helps greatly in repopulating eastern Pa and Philadelphia. Depending on who you talk to that is good thing or bad thing for Pa and Philly.
I am sure it is the same in MN. Having a lot of second, third genners and movers from other states who make the number way higher
It is very much the same...they say the Somali population in the state is about 20K, but the Somali community leaders say that the city of Minneapolis along has more like 60K-75K Somalis, much less the state (the bulk are in the Cities but some towns like Owatonna outstate have large #'s as well). I don't know about Nigerians but Somalis are slow to trust the American govt. surveyors who ask personal questions about their livelihood, which is often why the numbers don't reconcile.
I'm not sure how the Census could be THAT off in either case, but somewhere in the middle, perhaps, is a more realistic number. All I know is that I see what seems like a LOT of Somalis in the Twin Cities, and I don't consider 20K to be a "lot"...

I think it's always good when you add good, hard-working people who want to contribute to your region....not so much if those characteristics are lacking.
Interesting perspective. There are 3 things about a place that make them feel more or less worldly.
1. Diverse
2. International
3. Cosmopolitan
Each one succeeds the former, its sort of like thinking of a 'higher level' if you will. I think both Chicago and Houston are diverse and international but Chicago signs off right after that and Houston has some cosmopolitan characteristics to advance it to the door of this level like DC but the only true cosmopolitan places in the U.S. are NY, LA, and MIA [maybe SF] IMO.
The Bay Area is more diverse and more cosmopolitan than Miami.
I'll give you 'international' because Miami has a higher percentage of foreign born but the Bay Area is more foreign born than New York, and the Bay Area's foreign born population is not as dominated by one region as Miami is.

Yes. It seems to be a mixed bag in regards to the NYC outmigration into PA. The Allentown /Bethlehem region I believe saw the largest increase in crime in the usa a few years ago. The area has become somewhat of a destination for ex-Nyers/North Jerseyites.. Maybe its the disenchanted second + third generation of immigrants who are not thriving in NYC and turning certain parts of PA upside down.
