It seems like Chicago has the larger transit system compared to NJ Transit when not counting NYC. Though NJ Transit covers NJ Chicago's Metra and CTA lines could also cover NJ as well. The difference between both systems outside of the commuter realm is that NJ Transit has light rail along with only 4 PATH heavy rail lines while Chicago has more heavy rail. I haven't added up the ridership of both systems yet. The advantage that NJ has is population being next to NYC and Philly (Chicago metro could cover NJ if placed on top) but Chicago already has the largest number of (freight and passenger combined) rail tracks of any city in the country that could easily be used for more passenger line expansion that could even rival NYC. Chicago at one time had the largest transit system in the world during the 1930's. Right now NYC is number 1 in passenger rail while Chicago is 2nd. The question is do you think NJ Transit will ever catch up with Chicago's combined passenger rail hub system?

Chicago:

Total stations: 385 (Metra 240)(CTA 145)
Lines: 19 (Metra 11)(CTA 8)
Track Miles: 711 miles

NJ Transit:

Total stations: 222 (Rail 162)(Light Rail 60)
Lines: 14 (Rail 11)(Lightrail 3)
Track Miles: 536 miles

It could have the potential if NJ transit ever makes a serious commitment to improving mass transit in Southern New Jersey. It's quite a shame for the state to have no passenger rail service available in its fastest growing county(Gloucester County) that is also within close proximity to one of the top 5 largest cities in the country. smh.

There is a line from Philly to Atlantic City. Wouldn't that be enough? Not sure how the ridership for that line compares to say NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor line. I was on the Northeast Corridor line between NYPenn and and New Brunswick just last week it is pretty busy especially during rush where you have to stand due to lack of seating. Does the Atlantic City line get that kind of traffic like Northern NJ?

lol. You sound just like those NJ politicians from upstate. Half of them could care less whether South Jersey gets any funding at all.

Why are you comparing the Atlantic City line against the one of the busiest and arguably most important commuter rail line in the entire country. Not to mention the Northeast Corridor line connects the New York area with the Philadelphia area. Of course the Atlantic City line isn't going to rival ridership numbers of the NEC line.

If I were a NJ politician I would agree that NNJ should get more because NYC is more important than Philly.

What does Governor Christie think about NJ Transit. Does it get his full support? It pays to being nice to you're neighbors when you really need help (food, water etc.). I know personally since Hurricane Andrew.

btw, I will be heading that way tomorrow from Indy (due to my job) how bad is it over there?? This sucks
