I don't think either city should be ashamed of their transit. I've used MBTA, never SEPTA but the transit map is just as extensive as MBTA.

Just a little more effecient, better coverage of rail option in the core and directly sorrounding areas.

RR options are pretty similar but am more limited in those for Boston

Both have some pluses and minuses, just on the whole I give the edge to MBTA based on experience

I think I'll hand it to Septa.
I live in Pa, but have been in Boston several times to know that there service is somewhat unreliable compared to septa.

Is it me, or has there been a lot of Boston vs. Philadelphia threads lately?

Anyways, I think the MBTA is better than SEPTA. Not by a wide margin, but it's better.

I don't even think they are comparable. Boston has more rapid transit T lines, and more extensive. A stop takes you right to Logan. SEPTA has two rapid transit rail lines. That's it. The SEPTA map looks impressive, but it is all crappy regional rail that runs every hour except for every half hour during rush hour. Regional Rail here is slow and mostly all at grade crossings. At stops you have to climb down stairs as almost no stations have raised platforms. Very old and dated stations.

And of course the Metro in DC blows away SEPTA. All rapid transit from city to burbs in DC.

I came across a travel blog of two Dutch folks using SEPTA to get from the airport to CC. SEPTA doesn't even provide rapid transit to the airport, you have to use inconvenient regional rail.

Here is an excerpt:

The train operations are typical not European. In a train existing of 8 carriages there were at least 12 staff. No chance of buying a ticket in a slotmachine... Creditcard? Never heard off... So it all went manual even with one of those oldfashion clippers to punch holes in the paper ticket, indicating the date and month. Funny.

No, the R1 is commuter rail, not rapid transit.

A rapid transit, underground, subway, elevated railway, metro or metropolitan railway system is an electric passenger railway in an urban area with a high capacity and frequency, and grade separation from other traffic. Rapid transit systems are typically located either in underground tunnels or on elevated rails above street level. Outside urban centers, rapid transit lines may run on grade separated ground level tracks.
