I'm sure a lot of people are aware of this already but Savannah was originally expected to become GA's premier city when it was built, not Atlanta (which was called Terminus back then). That's why Savannah is laid out much more coherently than ATL.

I think if New Orleans was the size of San Francisco, it would be really impressive.

Chattanooga would also be very striking if it were a few million people larger.

Pittsburgh
Charleston
Cincinnati
Memphis

It seems that everyone wants New Orleans to see an explosion of growth, and while it might be cool, I can't help but wonder if it would dilute the spirit of the town. It's virtually the only major American city with any real unique culture, and I'd hate to see that be phased out.

I see your point New Orleans is some what provincial, that's part of the city allure. Rather then just exploding in growth now I wish it kept growing to be at least the size of Cleveland metro area may a San Francisco. But New Orleans having a Atlanta, Houston, Dallas or Miami skyline would be rather odd.

Reputation the size of Chicago?! Uhm ok....

My personal opinion, Milwaukee would be one that I would list.

Charleston is already incredible. But still would love to see it bigger with a seperate downtown away from the historic district

I wouldn't call a larger Pittsburgh a NYC competitor, it would have to have more than just a large population. It would have to have the diversity, economic strength and diversity, prominence and cultural strength in order to compete with NYC. A combo that perhaps only 5 cities have outside of NYC.

Already big but:

SF. People seem to forget that SF's city proper is only 805,000. Imagine if it were 2 million +!

I agree. All of the cities on my list are already great as they are, but I love the location and setting of Charleston, and it would be awesome to have a major city there.

New Orleans definitely. Can you imagine what the city would be like if it had a population of 5 million+?

Just guessing, but....

Chicago
LA
Boston
SF
Philadelphia

the 5 cities that could have an NYC status if they had NYC population? Perhaps Dallas, too. Houston seems to always be one oil crisis away from blowing away, and I exclude DC because it only exists for one reason, regardless of what the population is.

On second thought about Pittsburgh, it would probably have to shed off a lot of the things that make it such a strong town by default to grow into a large city, changing the dynamic altogether. I will say its reputation is far larger than its size, though. Until I cared to look it up, I had assumed Pittsburgh was a 1m+ city.
