Here are some lists random sampling, Philadelphia seems to be outlier in the poll though being 3rd? Though it could be that it isn't reporting categories to the BLS... LA for instance does not report it's Actors to the BLS for some reason. Indeed I just skimmed and it seems Philadelphia is not reporting several things, including craft artists... Philadelphia seems to have problems with census data all around.
Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations
All combined which covers pretty much everything... This major group comprises the following occupations: Art Directors ; Craft Artists ; Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators ; Multimedia Artists and Animators ; Artists and Related Workers, All Other ; Commercial and Industrial Designers ; Fashion Designers ; Floral Designers ; Graphic Designers ; Interior Designers ; Merchandise Displayers and Window Trimmers ; Set and Exhibit Designers ; Designers, All Other ; Actors ; Producers and Directors ; Athletes and Sports Competitors ; Coaches and Scouts ; Umpires, Referees, and Other Sports Officials ; Dancers ; Choreographers ; Music Directors and Composers ; Musicians and Singers ; Entertainers and Performers, Sports and Related Workers, All Other ; Radio and Television Announcers ; Public Address System and Other Announcers ; Broadcast News Analysts ; Reporters and Correspondents ; Public Relations Specialists ; Editors ; Technical Writers ; Writers and Authors ; Interpreters and Translators ; Media and Communication Workers, All Other ; Audio and Video Equipment Technicians ; Broadcast Technicians ; Radio Operators ; Sound Engineering Technicians ; Photographers ; Camera Operators, Television, Video, and Motion Picture ; Film and Video Editors ; Media and Communication Equipment Workers, All Other
Though I'd probably take out umpires, referees, athletes, technical writers and a few other things out...but somewhat of a good list there.
As could have been thought, NYC and LA are far and away higher than other places. NYC has the higher raw # overall, but LA has the highest percentage. But LA could have both higher raw # and percentage if you took out some of the above ^. DC doesn't fare well in a lot of categories but is exceptionally high in PR, Writing, Editing, Technical Writing and Reporters as well as fine artists and well paid art directors. SF by the list is higher than the poll suggests esp in location quotient and does very well in the art world. Biggest surprise (but maybe shouldn't be a surprise) I've seen is overall Boston and Chicago don't seem to perform very well per their size, and have low employment per thousands of jobs and a low location quotient factor esp in fashion, visual arts, and film related jobs like directors/producers. Chicago and Boston both fare OK for writing but mostly of a technical nature, and Chicago is high for musicians. Could it be the large amount of professional services in those cities? I single those two out b/c they usually are very high on city data polls yet for creative fields don't seem too good esp considering population sizes. for instance for a category such as producers and directors, Chicago fares worse out of la, nyc, washington, atlanta, sf, boston, miami and seattle both with the lowest amount of workers per population and the worst paid. Also have the lowest amount of journalists per population and comes in behind nyc, la, dc, boston, sf, and philadelphia. Some interesting trends to be sure. In multimedia artists, i.e. a field where artists actually get paid, Chicago and Boston bring up the rear behind all those cities plus behind Atlanta, Seattle and Minneapolis. If this was law, banking, sports or education Chicago and Boston usually tear up the numbers but seem surprisingly left out on this, being two of my favorite cities, it kind of sucks.
Some interesting side bits:
SF/Oakland has the highest paid artists. Atlanta has the highest paid journalists. San Diego has a ton of working artists, maybe those who were pushed out of LA?
Minneapolis and Seattle are surprisingly high in a few categories, but did not fit requirements over 5 mil.
There is plenty of Work in the LA / Orange County area for Web Developers and Designers. Good business writers are in demand at PR and Advertising agencies - especially of you have marketing chops.
Seattle is under 5 million but pulls far above its weight in terms of importance especially with creative types. It should definitely be in this poll.
I agree looking at the numbers, but I didn't want to go down a slippery slope, as I already didn't include a few other cities, Seattle is well deserving though and out performs cities like Dallas and Houston.
I have worked in a creative profession in Minneapolis for the last 20 years. I have known a lot of people here who did creative endeavors for a living (especially writers and musicians). Of those who have left most seem to have eventually ended up in LA, New York City seems to be the second most common destination.

Another realm of creativity exists in the advertising industry. Minneapolis is one of eight cities in the world classified by GaWC as a "prime" advertising service center. The others are Chicago, London, New York, Osaka, Paris, Seoul, and Tokyo.
