This is true. But Dominicans specifically, more than other Caribbean-Latin nations has that complex the worst. It's well know that Dominicans salons do the best at perms. And then you got former baseball player and current vampire Sammy Sosa's issues.
Yeah Dominicans tend to have these self-hate issues the most.
I consider Haitians to be Latino using the accepted definition. Its a Latin American country with a Latin influenced culture (France). It shares the SAME island as the Dominican Republic and no one ever asks if they are latino. I think most people believe that latino= hispanic and thats far from the truth.
That's what I said. Haitians can technically be classified as Latinos. Like you said, to most folks Latino=Hispanic, and Hispanic=White, Mestizo, Amerindian, etc. And they classify most Afro-Latinos as just Hispanic, and not Black, even though they are Black and of African descent. Zoe Saldana is classified as Hispanic, as opposed to Afro-Hisapnic. If you say she's Black, you will be corrected. Hispanic is more racial, while Latino is more cultural or language related it seems. Latino=Latin derived.
If we're going to call certain groups "Latino" based on any tenuous connection to Spanish colonialism, then we should also call Jamaicans, Bajans and Trinidadians "Latinos." Where do you think Spanish Town and Ocho Rios got their names from? Barbados is said to be a Spanish reference meaning "the Bearded Island." And Trinidad was founded by the Spanish, which explains (1) the heavy Catholicism on the island (largely owing to French influence as well) and (2) why so many Trinis have Spanish surnames.
So basically, this whole idea of Haitians being "Latinos" is pretty bogus. "Latino" would be more appropriately applied to Filipinos than Haitians.
Why are there two different categories - Spanish and Spaniard? Isn't that like having British and Briton?
Just to make things more clear, a "Latino" in my poll is someone from a country in the Americas that has a Latin-derived language and culture. That will include all the Spanish speaking countries and Brazil, that's it. Haiti does not count as most people there can't even speak French.
I didn't post that for the topic. I posted it because it shows that, since LA is more diverse, it could possibly have more diversity of Latinos than NYC.

But it doesnt. Miami and NYC have the most diverse Latino populations in the US. Cities like LA and Houston have diverse ones as well, but there simply isnt a match for the first two.
