I usually don't count professional sports when comparing the talent level of two states or cities as the majority of those teams are made up of foreigners that have nothing to do with the respective states.
However, I do find it pretty telling that Minnesota (pop. 5.5 mil) has produced more professional players than Michigan (pop 10 mil).

Definitely. I wanted to give Michigan credit though by not including Massachusetts in this discussion. Let's be honest Massachusetts doesn't even compare.
I actually lived in Boston for a short while, and don't remember anyone even mentioning hockey while I was there. Not once.
