I agree, but neither are Charlotte and Nashville. Maybe it was just the way I took it.

I'm surprised Birmingham wasn't on the list.

Birmingham is irrelevant to the South, IMHO.

What's that supposed to mean? It is a major city in the south.

Major city to Alabama? Sure. To the South? Definitely not.

Birmingham has over 1 million people in the metro and is almost exactly the same size as New Orleans. Birmingham is larger than any city in South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi, and is the same size as New Orleans. Outside of Atlanta it's tied for the largest city in the deep south.

But it's about the same size as Memphis and Richmond and larger than Charleston and Columbia. I don't get your logic here.

Metro Raleigh is only 60,000 people more than metro Birmingham.

Birmingham - 1,128,047
Charleston - 691,153
Columbia - 784,745
Raleigh - 1,188,564
Richmond - 1,282,509
Memphis - 1,316,100

Tell me again why Birmingham is not a major city in the south?

If you legit only look at Raleigh's metro and not the Triangle as a whole, I have nothing else to say to you.
