For a metro of almost 1 million, Bakersfield sure is lacking in terms of a quality downtown. Downtown really feels like a suburban office park with no density whatsoever and no height. I guess what Bakersfield has going for it is the natural scenery and proximity to LA.

Bakersfield is booming however, increasing in population 40% between 2000-2010. Anybody know whats driving it?

I'm not going to say anything unkind about Bakersfield...but this is a comparison that really shouldn't be made.

I've never even been to Nashville, but...Nashville by a hundred country miles...

For chrissakes man, I'd even take Fresno over Bakersfield and that says a lot considering how many relatives I have in Fresno that I never ever visit... Bakersfield...dear lord...I mean at least it's better than Stockton or maybe even Modesto, but...

That country music scene was probably cool circa 1964, but the best thing to do in Bakersfield is grab an In N' Out Burger and just keep driving--over the Tehachapis towards the Sierra or Los Angeles or Las Vegas or the coast or any damn where but Bakersfield.... I don't like bad-mouthing cities on here, but Bakersfield...holy f**k.
