I was checking out some streetview of Troy, NY based on this urban decay thread and I noticed something. The Troy area sits near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers - and here is their beautiful waterfront. Seriously. Where the presence of two flowing rivers is even acknowledged, it's usually with some concealing vegetation or a chain-linked fence.

Troy is hardly unique in hiding from its rivers. Most of Philadelphia's riverfronts are cut off by interstates, refineries, shipyards or the airport. Only in recent years has Philadelphia begun to really take advantage of these banks. Kansas City was built where the Kansas River meets the Missouri, and that spot is occupied by an airport. The Los Angeles River is better known for that once scene in Terminator 2 than it is for existing.

Still there are places that make great use of their rivers like Pittsburgh's North Shore riverfront; and the Chicago River is one of the most impressive sights in any American city IMO. Any other good examples out there?

I thought the LA River was not really a natural waterway.

Houston totally ruined theirs by concreting all of them.

Houston was founded at the Confluence of the Buffalo and White Oak water ways.

Rochester NY sadly really under-utilizes the Genesee River which runs right through it...even sadder is there are TWO waterfalls DOWNTOWN....and still; almost completely ignored. They are the highest urban waterfalls in the US.

It totally is actually. It's definitely obe of the worst utilizations, luckily aggressive attempts to improve it are underway. Surprisingly, it is not all bad. There are some natural bottom parts in the Valley and near Elysian Park.

Both Dallas and Fort Worth are still doing their respective Trinity River projects.

Dallas is creating more parks with theirs and Fort Worth is basically creating an Uptown with an urban lake.... although Fort Worth does uses the river a little better than Dallas does.

Any links to LA river projects? I'd love to see it repaired, but I wonder if it's already too far gone for people to know or care about it.

That's actually really impressive. I didn't know that. Crazy that it wouldn't be featured more.

Philadelphia has a pretty ambitious plan for the Delaware waterfront. It may be a little too optimistic in places, but I love the giant waterfront green: http://i.imgur.com/GqJq6jt.jpg

It's a private casino, but the boardwalk from the proposed riverfront Wynn Casino also seems nicer than what's out there now. http://i.imgur.com/4GBzqex.jpg
