Please do not consider the proximity to LA as a positive for the OC.
• Keep in mind these two areas are comparable by population
Orange County has 3,010,232
Charlotte CSA is 2,454,619

OC is much denser and has a lot more to do...it has mountains to the east and beach to the west...it is much more affluent then most of Charlotte. It has LA only 30 minutes to the north and SD only 1-1.5 hours to the south. Hell, OC alone has more people in the whole Charlotte CSA LOL.
When I used to live in LA, I'd go down to OC frequently to hang out. It actually has decently walkable suburbs just because of how dense the suburbs are.

My responses above in bold.
I can see Charlotte beating O.C. in two areas: public transportation and friendliness/hospitality of the people. While I think I would like Charlotte and find it a great city, I would rather live in Orange County in this stage of my life.
I know that Charlotte has light rail, but I don't think that it beats OC in public transportation. OCTA has more buses in a smaller area running more frequently with two and a half times the ridership of CATS.

Oh my God... please... Charlotte, the suburbanites' boring dream
I found that city so booooring that I was literally struggling to keep my eyes open
It should also be realized that as a county, OC is the nation's sixth-largest and has a ton of advantages in terms of recreation, industry, entertainment, etc. By itself, it could easily compete with many other metros across the country, so I don't see this match-up as being some sort of knock against Charlotte which is probably what it was conceived as.
