MLB in Portland would be a success. Great summer weather, no serious sports competition as MLS is a minor sport in Portland. They talk way more MLB and college baseball on sports radio than soccer.

The area is growing, they produce MLB players, they produce NCAA championship teams, and they watch the sport on TV. MLB as the 2nd major sports franchise in Portland would do real well. They could also partner with Comcast and make a ton of $ with an RSN that competes with the Mariners/DirecTV partnership.
From 2001-2003, Portland had unbelievable ratings for baseball. As the decade progressed and the young in-migrants increased the metro population, ratings plummeted.

That's pretty much my point. The folks who are building up the market aren't going to rush out to support the team.

So the fact that Portland had tremendous baseball tv ratings when the market wasn't quite big enough for baseball doesn't really matter much.

Too bad it's out of the question for the time period.

With two minor moves, MLB could aid trouble markets without drastic relocation.

Move the A's to San Jose and Rays to Tampa. After fixing those franchises, then expansion can be a reality to even the number of teams in each league. It will also give prospective markets like Charlotte, Portland, San Antonio-Austin, Vancouver, etc. more time to grow.

No. The ratings plunged because the Mariners started to suck a--, not because all of those baseball loving Californians and rural NWesterners moved in. Don't forget west coast = baseball country, and Oregon is smack dab in the middle of it.

You thousands of miles away (I am 110 away) think soccer is mainstream in Portland while baseball is a fringe sport. The exact opposite is true. Portland is a great baseball town.

MLS is a secondary sport, even in the NW. In Seattle, where they are far and away #1 in attendance, they never talk Sounders soccer on either of the two major sports radio stations during the week. You will have to tune into a special show on one of the stations on Saturday if you want your soccer sports radio fix.

Portland metro area has 3,000,000 people, it is a large enough market population wise.

Are you claiming that Portland fans are front-runners? If so, are you going to import the '27 Yanks?

Okay, maybe I over-stepped with the soccer comparison, but doesn't Portland claim to be Soccer City, USA?

Radio stations tend to be run by middle-aged men who have an unhealthy affection for baseball, basketball and football talk.

I did stay five months in Portland, by the way.

No, just smart enough not to waste their time with the pathetic product Lincoln-Armstrong has been throwing out in Seattle since they chased Pat Gillick away.

Oneonta, NY

TALK radio station tend to stick to the subject a majority of their listeners want to talk and listen to. Soccer is still a fringe sport, even in Seattle and Portland, which is why they stopped talking about it. They tried talking soccer when the MLS first arrived, but it didn't go over well so it has been since relegated to weekend programing.

Austin and San Antonio deserve an MLB team. The stadium can be in San Antonio but will still draw Austin natives. The two have a combined population of around 4 million. Charlotte is too country to have an MLB team. Charlotte can stick with AAA!

NYC? Are you kidding? 20-30 million people to draw from and a payroll two-three times everybody else in baseball. Pretty easy to draw fans there. Mets should draw better than they do when they have the population of the smallest five metros combined within five miles of the place. The Mets are not "that" bad and even if they were, they have no excuse not to draw. The Yankees should win the world series every year with their payroll and while they woefully underperform they are usually competitive and in the pennant race ever year yet don't sell out.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee does not even have 2 million people in its entire metro and consistently averages 35,000 a game even though they rarely really compete and go to the playoffs.

That’s a baseball town. NYC? ha
NY is a great baseball city. Period. The Yankees, by far, have the largest fan base in all of baseball (and with the possible exception of Notre Dame football, all sports). They have a history and tradition unmatched by ANY pro franchise or college program. And baseball runs the city - you see arguably more Yankees apparel there than all other pro franchises put together. And as already mentioned, part of the reason why you might see a few empty seats in Yankees Stadium is that tickets are so darn expensive, not everyone can afford to go.

Look, it's good when teams like the Brewers are competitive. I love it when small market teams stick it to the big boys. But comparing the city of a historic cellar-dwellar to the city of the greatest American sports franchise ever is silly.

I'd be willing to bet the Brew Crew comes in 3rd in its own city to Green Bay and the Wisconsin Badgers. Heck, there's probably a decent contingent of Cubbies in the area since it's only about 2 hours away.

Really? Then why is a minor league ballpark being built in uptown?

Charlotte will more than likely end up with a MLB team, but it probably won't be for another 15 - 20 years.
