Just curious to see what resposes this post will get. I have heard Houston compared to San Diego before. I've only been through Houston briefly, once driving through it and once connecting at the airport. From what I saw, I thought Houston is more comparable to Los Angeles than to San Diego, since Houston is a more industrial city and has a lot of oil refineries, like L.A.

L.A. doesn't have refineries. And Houston's refineries are limited to the industrial east-side suburb cities like Channelview and Baytown... not around the rest of Houston.
Anyway, I'd say San Diego has better scenery and weather but is much more expensive, while Houston has better culture/arts and similar indoor activities, is less expensive but not as pretty as the SD area. So it comes down to what you're really looking for in a place...
I have been to Houston on several occasions, and have lived my whole life in San Diego can make a good comparision. I really enjoyed myself in Houston, and I can see why it is growing so fast compared to other cities. But like other cities, the quality of life just can't be matched to that of wher I live now. Sure Houston has more of that 'stuff' that seems to make a city really amazing. But as a whole, there were many areas that I saw that I wouldn't tell my worst enemy to go into. Really great international town, but when it comes down to things that make a city nice for it's residents, and not for the average tourist, I just don't think that Houston can come close to us. Just my opinion. Houston is still one of my top favorite cities in the nation thought.
I'd rather live in L.A. than San Diego. San Diego felt too sleepy compared to L.A. The only reasons I would visit is to gamble there instead of HOT and sleazy Las Vegas or to swim in La Jolla after being bored from Santa Monica's beach.
San Diego is beautiful no doubt but I would take Houston. One reason is its population is far more diverse. It has 4 seasons but yet not so cold in the winter. People say Houston is sprawly but I found San Diego to be sprawly too. I could live in both but I'll take Houston.

How about Detroit versus Honolulu? Cleveland versus San Francisco? New York versus Gary, Indiana? In the real world (not these forums where people overvalue cities that most people abhorr) San Diego is so much preferred to Houston it isn't even mentioning in the same breath. Let's see- perfect weather, beaches, accessibility to skiing, or lots and lots of ghettos air polllution and oppressive humidity? Um, I will go with San Diego.
