I lived in Seattle (U District) and in Berkeley (next to Oakland).
Seattle takes it. However, Oakland by itself isn't too shabby. It's changed a lot since I've lived there, but Oakland definitely has a more gritty side to it than Seattle.
Oakland has a huge crime problem that Seattle doesn't, but I'm sure 18Montclair will chime in and say that's restricted to a few neighborhoods.
Seattle is definitely way more water oriented than Oakland is. Seattle also has more of a center city feeling to it that Oakland has yet to get, though I like Oakland's Chinatown more than I-District. There's a more obvious professional preference in Seattle than in Oakland, but that's changing as more companies move to the East Bay. Still, IMO doesn't compare to Seattle.
Both have a ton of hipsters, many of who left SF (oddly enough, true for both cities)

Seattle has a gritty history that has been gentrified over and crime has gone down, but it still has gritty areas and is about middle of the road for violent crime. Oakland is grittier and has a much higher murder rate (among the highest in the country).
However, one area where Oakland excels over nearly everywhere else is being a racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse city - it feels like a true melting pot - much moreso than Seattle or San Francsico for that matter.
Location: East of Seattle since 1992, 615' Elevation, Zone 8b - originally from SF Bay Area

I worked in Oakland 17 years, work in Seattle now. I also lived in Oakland a few years, and all 3 kids were born there at Kaiser. There is really no comparison. Seattle wins on every category you mentioned. If you like sun, Oakland would at least win that one, but it's the only thing better there that I can think of.
Ah, one more, the A's are almost always better than the Mariners. . .but then there's the Raiders and the Seahawks.

True about the sun overall, but Seattle has warmer and better summers.

The criteria :
Urban Feel: Oakland
People: Oakland
Better life: Tied
Entertainment: Oakland
Architectures: Seattle has a better skyline
Economy: both are doing very well
Education: Seattle city( although much of Oakland has very high educational attainment) but as far as metro-Oakland.
Safest: Seattle has lower crime rate
Downtown: Seattle as far as strict city vs city but that has to be specified because I am minutes from SF.
Nightlife: Tied.
Suburbs: Oakland
Landscape: Oakland
Future possibilities: Tied but really Oakland
Job: Oaklanders are within commuting distance of the more high paying jobs
Public transportation: Oakland
Shopping: Oakland
Open mindness: Tied but its Oakland
Cost of living: Seattle is cheaper
Rent: Seattle is cheaper
School: both have good and bad
weather: Oakland
I like Seattle a lot but Oakland is such a vastly underrated city that people think is some 1990s Compton North--they cant comprehend what they see when they come to areas such as mine.
