Which is more Diverse?

now of course, Manhattan has nearly twice as many people of Northwest Indiana.

But is it twice as diverse?

Northwest Indiana has

Gary-style ghettoes
beach towns
Jewish Temples, Mosques, a Hindu Center
Oprah's old estate
Michael Jackson's birthplace
the Nation's biggest steel mills
Casinos on boats
white collar and blue collar residents living side by side
urban and rural residents
farmers and bus drivers
a major national park
Mexican neighborhoods
McMansion neighborhoods
Middle Class neighborhoods
Strip Malls
30 miles of beaches
Polish neighborhoods and a Pierogi festival
rolling duneland

Can Manhattan even hope to compare with such diversity?

Just making a point Lammius.

To me Gary/NW Indiana is more DIVERSE than Manhattan. More landscapes, types of people, classes of people, types of workplaces, lifestyles, housing styles.....

In the main shopping area of Northwest Indiana, you will encounter everything from urban sophisticates to truckers to rural farmers, suburbanites/soccer moms, steel mill workers, every race, every religion (all residents of the SAME neighborhoods) folks from the barrio/hood.....all shopping in the same stores and eating in the same restaurants.

Does that happen in Manhattan?

I'll take Gary any day over that island of Manhattan. Manhattan isn't as urban, it wishes it held the clout that Gary does.

Gary/NWI has little to no clout in Manhattan, and Manhattan has little to no clout in Gary/NWI.

seriously, never meet even one Manhattanite in the Region, let alone one that had any local clout or a Dunetop mansion.

Gary could be the most diverse city in the world and that wouldn't save it from (currently) being a waste of space... I spent way too many summers there when I was growing up to think any differently.

You could query some Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics data to find out.
